Washington, D.C. (August 21, 2019) — Alisha Powell Gillis has been named Senior Editor at Route Fifty, the leading news publication connecting the leaders and ideas advancing state and local government. Gillis joins Route Fifty at a time of record growth for the brand, which today boasts a database of 80,000 active users and, this year, will produce 13 events reaching over 3,700 people in 12 cities.
“Alisha brings deep experience in working with state and local governments and expertise in events programming, issue analysis and project management,” said Government Executive Media Group Editor in Chief Tom Shoop. “She will play a pivotal role in the future growth of Route Fifty, and I’m excited she’s joining our team.”
At Route Fifty, Gillis will program live and online events content, moderate panel discussions, solicit, edit and write analytical pieces, and oversee the annual Navigator Awards program. She will work with Route Fifty’s award-winning team of journalists and event producers to help maintain Route Fifty as the go-to source of information and analysis for those looking to understand the rapidly evolving state and local government landscape. She will be based at Route Fifty’s Washington, D.C. headquarters and report to Shoop, while working closely with Laura Maggi, Route Fifty’s managing editor.
“I am thrilled and honored to join Route Fifty. I look forward to leveraging my experience advising governors and city and county officials to help Route Fifty continue to grow,” said Gillis.
Gillis comes to Route Fifty from the Urban Libraries Council, where she led the organization’s programming in support of urban public libraries, including designing content, recruiting speakers and moderating roundtables, forums and other events. Before joining the council, Gillis was program director at the National Governors Association, where she specialized in homeland security, emergency management and cybersecurity issues. She arranged meetings and conferences for governors and state policymakers, moderated discussions, wrote issue briefs and guides for governors’ offices, and edited a weekly homeland security newsletter.
